Training and Development

TEC Construction has an on-going training programme for all managers and operatives, in order to keep up to date with current health and safety regulations. Employee competence is ascertained using the Construction Site Safety Certificate Scheme. It is desirable that all personnel working on sites are holders of the CSCS Card or at least have registered with this scheme or another affiliated national registration scheme which includes health and safety and environmental competence as part of the programme (i.e. CPCS).

Every TEC employee will have a basic level of competence with the job that he or she is expected to do. Through training, competence levels of individuals will be increased to ensure continued progress, where appropriate, within the company. Regular two way consultation with the workforce assists in identifying any shortfalls within capabilities which allows any immediate deficit to be rectified as soon as practicable. New employees are assessed on their capabilities prior to being allowed on site, then once on site, monitored to establish competence.

A training register is kept showing of all TEC employees training qualifications and requirements and is updated accordingly. TEC Construction is committed to CSCS accreditation. Site personnel regularly attend safety-training courses arranged by several training agencies:

  • Safety Consultants – Noble Consultancy
  • Plymouth Construction Training, (of which we are a member)
  • CITB Construction College
  • Construction Training Group (for First Aid)
  • Plant Training & Assessment Providers
  • Others as and when required

Site personnel are trained in the use of the tools and equipment for everyday use and to operate the various types of construction plant that are frequently needed. All personnel who work on or visit the construction sites go through a site specific induction prior to being allowed access on site. ‘On the job’ refresher training takes place weekly on site in the form of toolbox talks covering site safety and the correct use of tools and equipment. Regular briefs covering diverse subjects such as the procedures for fire evacuations and accident procedures are given.

TEC Construction Site Managers have taken the following mandatory training courses:

  • CSCS Certified
  • CITB SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) (5 days)
  • CIEH Environmental Awareness
  • Asbestos Awareness
  • First Aid at Work (4 days)
  • Temporary Works Awareness
  • Scaffold Awareness & Inspection

Our training policy is a continuous operation and is arranged so that all sites have specific key workers who have received the necessary training to use the plant and equipment for that site. More specific job roles are given to qualified personnel, however, should a specific need arise on a particular site, the relevant training is arranged to cover the item of plant, equipment or power tool to be used.
