Constructed in the early 1960s and welcoming hundreds of legal professionals and visitors through its doors every year, Plymouth’s Combined Court building is an iconic structure located in the heart of the city centre. However, following years of water ingress, structural investigations revealed that urgent improvements and upgrades were needed to not only make the building a more comfortable and warmer place to work, but also to ensure justice could continue being served without interruption.
Serving as Principal Contractor, TEC was tasked with bringing the building up to modern waterproofing standards; which included refurbishing and replacing its ageing copper mansard roof, as well as the structure’s UPVC windows.
Working on a busy court building had its own set of unique challenges, with all works required to take place outside of live court sessions; starting at 6am, stopping before 10am (when legal proceedings began) and recommencing at 5pm. Ensuring there was no construction noise was vital to ensure courts could continue without delay.
Helping to safeguard the building’s future, and with the stunning detail of its copper roof now brought back to life, staff can continue their important work in protecting the community, without any threat from the elements.
