Kilkhampton Primary School

Programme:

Value:

To meet local demand for additional school places, Cornwall Council looked to a former nursery block at Kilkhampton Junior and Infant School to create new teaching space.  Leading the works, TEC began with demolishing the existing structure to make way for the construction of a new state-of-the art classroom block. This included removing all drainage and foundations to allow for a larger, more spacious building to be created in its place.

The new building was constructed using a timber frame, wrapped in face brickwork; decorated in bright, cheerful colours. Featuring plenty of natural light, thanks to the installation of new windows, sustainable energy sources were also incorporated into the structure to limit the impact on the surrounding environment. This includes under floor heating provided by an Air Source Heat Pump, and solar panels installed on the roof.

Working within a live school environment, and in close proximity to neighbouring properties, the TEC team focused on carrying out all works with minimal disruption. As well as two new teaching spaces, the new single storey building also includes four toilets, two storerooms and a plant room, all of which will help the school increase its future pupil admissions.

Commenting on the project, Headteacher, Michael Watson said: “TEC constructed a double classroom building for us at Kilkhampton Junior and Infant School.  We were impressed by TEC at all levels.  The standard of workmanship has been superb and communication has been excellent.  The company understood the nature of working in a school environment and were flexible, professional and always willing to help. They listened to the school’s needs and were able to accommodate them without affecting the integrity of the programme.

“Despite the wettest winter on record in already-wet north Cornwall, they delivered the project on schedule to a very high standard and coped quickly and effectively in response to challenges as they arose.  The work of Johnnathan Blake, the site manager on the project, was of a very high-standard.  He represented the company in a professional manner and liaised effectively with the school on every occasion, sorting potential issues and managing the site professionally and capably during the school term and during weekends and holidays.

“He and Nigel Fisk were the main contacts for the school from TEC and were trusted partners throughout the whole programme. I would like to thank them and the wider company for the superb way this project was conducted.”
