Mills Bakery, Royal William Yard

Mills Bakery is located at the heart of Plymouth’s Grade I listed destination, Royal William Yard. Built in 1831, the building was once home to a thriving naval facility. Fast-forward to today, the iconic award-winning structure is home to businesses, apartments and restaurants, with its regeneration combining historic architecture with the best in modern design.

TEC was briefed to lead the reconfiguration of Mills Bakery’s top floor, with a focus on splitting one of its large, empty commercial spaces into two – ahead of the arrival of two new, high profile business tenants.

Respecting the historic integrity of the structure was integral to the success of the project, with TEC working closely with the project team to ensure that the design and installation of a new partition wall would not affect insitu materials; which included two-hundred-year-old timbers and roofing beams.

Utilising over 500 pieces of plasterboard, TEC built out a partition wall which seamlessly blended into its historic surroundings. The team also carried out all associated electrical and decoration works. In addition, the team also installed new doors, and created a new reception/welcome space, ahead of its full fit-out.

Working within a live building, the team has done an outstanding job, utilising materials and methods to ensure the new wall integrated with the historic fabric of the structure and its iconic original features, while also making two new high quality, open-plan working spaces.
