Covering 35 hectares in Plymouth’s Devonport Dockyard, Oceansgate is the world-class waterfront home of marine based businesses and a thriving hub of research, production and innovation. Its unique position and facilities also make it the ideal location for those looking to learn, work or expand their career in the flourishing marine and engineering industries.
Working with leading local education provider, City College Plymouth, TEC was charged with transforming seven of Oceansgate’s new, industrial units into a dedicated marine based education facility. Extending over an area of 631sqm, and with TEC leading the project as Principal Contractor, the extensive works included the creation of multiple teaching spaces, workshops, break-out areas, restrooms and even a new mezzanine floor.
Working to a strict programme, and with all works completed in just a few months, we managed every stage of the project alongside City College Plymouth, from conception to completion. This included being responsible for all project programme elements, from the initial set-up and structural works to providing the infrastructure needed to support the state-of-the-art facility, in addition to the initial internal fit-out.
Utilising multiple skilled trades, just some of the works provided included; constructing the new mezzanine floor and dividing walls, installing new ventilation systems, as well as all flooring and ceilings, fitting all required electrics (including providing its students with the ability to utilise the building’s IT systems across multiple spaces) and plumbing, as well as installing a new passenger lift and stairwells. Transforming almost every inch of the immense space, our works also extended to its internal decoration.
Students and staff now have access to a variety of flexible, open working and learning spaces, while its accessible design makes it easy for occupants to navigate in and around the building. The extensive use of glass partitions also softly divides office and communal areas, with its modern decoration and quality finish integrating perfectly with its surrounding waterfront environment.
Handing over to the client in July 2021, the units are now unrecognisable from the original empty state, with the new, high quality teaching facility having everything required to equip future students with the skills needed to support their professional development; helping to cement the city’s position as a leading force in the global marine and engineering industries.
